Kevin P. Stringer
General Secretary-Treasurer
Background Information
General Secretary-Treasurer Kevin Stringer began his career
in the elevator industry 30 years ago in Local 1-New York. Brother
Stringer served as the Union Area Representative of Local 1
for the NY Housing Authority members from 1975 to 1978. In 1979,
Kevin relocated to the Scranton, Pennsylvania area with his
wife, Janet, and began his career in union administration at
the local level, when he was elected and served on the Executive
Board of Local 76-Scranton, Pennsylvania. In 1982, he was elected
Local 76s President, and in 1984 was elected as business
agent for Local 76 prior to Local 76s merger into Local
84. In 1987, and continuing for four (4) terms until 1998, Brother
Stringer was elected and served as full-time Business Representative
for Local 84.
During his tenure as Business Representative of Local 84 from
1987 to 1998, Brother Stringers interest and focus in
union administration was apparent when he was able to significantly
stabilize the finances of his local; close open territory with
NEII for his local, reached an agreement in his area for the
running of elevators and outside hoists with the operating engineers;
initiated and won a grievance with a major elevator company
resulting in the company having to rewrite their safety policy,
and restore back pay not only to his own local union members
who were grieved, but also restore back pay to other members
throughout the IUEC as well.
In 1996 at the 27th General Convention, Kevin was elected to
the position of International Vice President to serve on the
General Executive Board of the IUEC. In 1998 and until 2001,
Kevin was appointed to serve in a concurrent capacity as IUEC
Regional Director. Also, in 1998, Brother Stringer was appointed
by the Pennsylvania Governors Board to serve on the Elevator
Industry Advisory Committee.
Kevin currently serves as Trustee for the Elevator Industry
Work Preservation Fund, a position to which he was elected in
1997. President Brigham has assigned Kevin to focus on the implementation
of continuing education programs for Elevator Constructors in
the United States and Canada working in conjunction with EIWPF
Director Jesse Bielefeld.
In April 2001, IUEC General President Brigham appointed, and
the IUEC General Executive Board confirmed, Brother Stringer
to serve as the IUEC General Secretary-Treasurer filling the
unexpired term of Richard Scariot who retired. Kevin also serves
as the Co-chairman and Trustee for the National Elevator Industry
Benefit Plans administering the 401(k) for the IUEC and the
national Health and Pension Plans for the IUEC membership.
