Background Information
Assistant General President Tim Smith began his career in the elevator industry
in December 1969 with Local 127, Jackson, Mississippi, as a probationary helper
for Otis Elevator Company.
Following the conclusion of the 1972 strike, Tim moved to Local 74, Tampa, Florida, and began working for United States Elevator Corporation running construction jobs around the country. In 1987, he went back to work for Otis Elevator Company as a maintenance mechanic.
Tim served Local 74 as an Executive Board member for ten years, as vice president for two years and president for two years until being elected business representative in December 1992.
During the 27th General Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1996, Brother Smith was elected eighth vice president of the IUEC and served on the General Executive Board until the 28th General Convention in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 2001.
In November 1999, Brother Smith was appointed as an IUEC organizer by General President Edward Sullivan. In August 2000, General President Dana Brigham appointed Brother Smith regional director, serving the IUEC in the central region and later in the southeastern region of the United States.
Tim served on the 2002 negotiations committee as an appointed member; became active in the grievance and arbitration procedure, assisting the International in arbitrations and chairing the National Arbitration Committee; was a trustee on the Elevator Constructor 401(k) and currently serves as a trustee to the Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund.
In 2003, he attended the Harvard University Trade Union Executive Program in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in September 2006, at the IUEC's 29th General Convention in Kona, Hawaii, Tim was elected, unanimously, to the position of assistant general president.
